WHITE SALMON - Needing a win to stay alive in the hunt for a District IV volleyball berth, the Ilwaco ladies were defeated three games to nil at far off White Salmon. "The Lady Bruins have strong, heavy hitters and they pretty much overpowered our team," Coach Grant Chinn said of the match.
The coach talked of next season, saying, "We hope to be more specialized, with more front row and back row responsibilities for each girl. Hopefully we will have more depth and be able to substitute in certain situations." He plans to have open gym time for volleyball players during the spring and summer months to give the returnees ample opportunity to work on their skills.
Chinn had praise for Heather Hocking. "Heather has been the quarterback all year for us and her play has meant a great deal to our success. She has excellent skills and is very versatile." The Lady Fishermen won 14 games and dropped 33. They finished fourth in the Ocosta Tournament, defeating three teams there.
"Mary Margaret Tomberlin is a very hard worker and an encourager," Chinn went on to say of the senior. "Nicole Adams is by far our hardest hitter and has improved throughout the season. Her and Brittney Fox love to play and both have a very steady attitude that helps them put the matches in perspective."
Chinn said, "It's tough to start as a freshman, but Katie Hazen and Marissa Janas stepped right in, served very well for us, and gained confidence quickly. Katie is a versatile, athletic player and Marissa plays excellent defense. Both will improve."
"Laura Herbold and Argelia Mendez are doing their best, have learned the game quickly, and are assets to the team," the coach went on to say. "Michelle Wroble came out later in the season, but has already shown competitiveness and leadership. Jenny Bergeson overcame an injury and is a very intense player. Amanda Faggard has the potential to be a strong front row hitter next season."
Chinn and assistant, Laurie Hazen, both in their rookie seasons as high school coaches, are both encouraged with their squad's improvement.
