NASELLE — The Comets scored a victory over the Raymond Lady Seagulls by winning the fifth and deciding set 15-8 after the two squads had split the first four games in a Pacific League volleyball match Oct. 24.

The Comets won the first two sets 25-17 and 25-15 and seemed in control, but then dropped the next two 25-19 and 25-17. The win was the first league victory for the Comets this season.

“Our hitters were on fire,” said Taylor Eaton, who led the Comets with 11 assists. “Honestly, I am not sure why we lost the third and fourth games, other than we were really quiet as a team. Otherwise the communication was great,”

Kendra Leeland, Marisa Woods and Abbey DaVall each had six kills to lead the Comets attack.

Naselle had lost to Raymond in five sets on Oct. 1 after winning the first two games, then losing the next three.

“It was nice to get revenge against Raymond after they beat us in five sets at their place,” coach Kim Eaton said.

Abbey DaVall served six crucial points in the fifth game to give the Comets momentum.

“Abbey was consistent the whole game and provided great leadership,” said coach Eaton. “Marisa Woods did a great job with hitting, defense and serve-receive passing.”

Nelson contributed four kills and three aces and Haley Pine led the Comets with nine kills. Taylor Eaton served 100 percent and had an outstanding serve-receive percentage. DaVall, Kendra Leeland and Woods each had six kills apiece and Woods had a high serve-receive rate, as did Madison Green, who also served three aces.

The Lady Seagulls are 2-8 in the Pacific League and 2-10 overall, while Naselle improves to 1-9 in league play, one game behind Raymond.

Raymond eked out a win in the junior varsity match 25-21, 24-26 and 15-9. In the C-squad match Raymond won 25-21 and 25-15.
