NASELLE - Putting the ball in the hoop and turnovers continued to be problem areas for the Naselle Comets girls basketball team as they fell 53-20 to the Willapa Valley Vikings in a Pacific League game played in the Naselle gym Friday, Jan. 2. The Comets league record fell to 2-4 and 2-8 overall.

The Comets and the Vikings matched point for point through the first eight minutes of play, with the result being an 8-8 tie. But a lid seemed to drop over the Comets basket after that and the Comets never did get close to their first period scoring through the balance of the game, only scoring five, four, and 3 points in each of the last three quarters.

The Vikings, however, found their shooting touch and they were in double figures in each of the last three quarters, scoring 15, 14, and 16 points respectively. Valley led 23-13 at the half and continued to pull away from the Comets in the second half.

"The kids played hard," said coach Bob Torppa. "We stayed right with them and played real well for a quarter, but then we forgot to score after that. We have been doing that for the last few games and our scoring suffers.

"We are working to get our shots in closer and to get the ball to Kelli (Revis) and Annie (Herrold), so they can get their shots closer to the basket. The kids are playing hard and, hopefully, the better shots will come.

"So far, we haven't been able to get rid of the turnover bug, and we had 32 in this game. We have to continue to work on that."

The Comets' problems were twofold: shooting - where they were 6 of 35 from the floor and 7 for 17 from the foul line - and turnovers, where they turned the ball over 32 times.

Revis scored 8 points and pulled down 5 rebounds for the only Comet to score near double figures. Valley had two players in double figures.

The Naselle girls now face four away league games in succession, starting at South Bend this Thursday, Jan 8. They then travel to Lake Quinault on Saturday, to Northwest Christian in Lacey next Tuesday, and to Oakville next Thursday.
