NASELLE - The Comets slipped by Valley 31-23 in Pacific 2B League basketball action at Naselle Saturday to avenge an earlier one-point loss to the Vikings. Kaelee Dearmore pulled down 10 rebounds and Nicole Laney and Nicole Tarabochia each chipped in seven points to give Naselle their third league victory in seven tries.

Coach Bobby Torppa said, "We played excellent defense, but we again didn't shoot the basketball very well." The Vikings never scored more than eight points in any one period, but the Comets shot only 28 percent from the floor, making 13 of 46 tries and whiffing on all four of their three-point tries. Naselle made five of 15 free throws for only 33 percent accuracy, but they were called for a season-low seven fouls on the evening.

Laney led the Comets with four assists and Taylor Wasmundt dished out three. Orianne Condon hustled for six rebounds and Shelby Leeland pulled down five boards. Dearmore and Haleigh See scored four points, Emily Green and Condon had three each, Wasmundt had two points and Lindsey O'Kelley added one.

Torppa said, "We did a nice job on our full court press tonight and got eight steals from it. Kaelee's 10 rebounds helped give us a spark." Naselle turned the basketball over 11 times and won the battle of the boards 39-35. The Comets improve to 5-10 on the season, while Valley drops to 5-8 for the year.

Lady Wildcats tamed 43-32 by Naselle in Pacific playWESTPORT - Naselle's girls' basketball team out-shot an opponent from the field and the result was a 43-32 Pacific 2B League win over Ocosta there Thursday. The Comets improved to 35.4 percent by making 17 of their 48 field goal attempts. The Lady Wildcats were only 11-44 for 25 percent from the floor, thanks in large part to the Comets defensive efforts.

The Naselle trio of Nicole Laney at guard and Nicole Tarabochia at forward led the winners in scoring with 13 points each and Shelby Leeland at the post added 11 points in the paint as the threesome helped spark the Comets to their second league win of the season against four losses. Ocosta falls to 1-6 in the Pacific and is 1-12 for the year, while Naselle improves to 4-10 overall.

Coach Bobby Torppa said, "The Nicoles (Laney and Tarabochia) and Shelby (Leeland) shot a combined 49 percent from the field and did a great job of scoring." Tarabochia had an exceptional all-around game as she also had nine rebounds, seven steals and four blocked shots. Laney led the Comets with four assists and also kicked in five steals.

The Comets defense deserved much of the credit for the victory as they forced the Lady Wildcats into 34 turnovers and lost the basketball but 19 times themselves. The Lady Wildcats scored a meager 18 points in the initial three periods. Naselle also out-rebounded their hosts 45-39. The Comets were 9-19 from the foul line for 47 percent, while Ocosta was 9-16 for 56 percent.

Emily Woolsey led the Lady Wildcats with 18 points and nine rebounds. Also scoring for Naselle were Emily Green and Kaelee Dearmore with two points apiece and Orianne Condon, Taylor Wasmundt and Shelby Leeland with one point each. Ocosta eked out a 33-31 win in the junior varsity contest.
