NASELLE The Comets forced 28 turnovers, shot 51 percent from the field, and overwhelmed Valley 62-22 in a Pacific 2B game in Naselle Friday, Jan. 28. The Comets exploded for a 20-4 first period lead and the game was never in doubt after the initial eight minutes.
Carley Kitzman led the winners with 24 points and Nicole Tarabochia tossed in 15 points and garnered 10 rebounds for a double-double. Haleigh See added nine points and dished out five assists. Kitzman pilfered eight steals from the Lady Vikings and pulled down six rebounds and Tarabochia had three steals and seven assists.
Ciara Sandell nabbed seven rebounds, had a pair of thefts, and scored four points. Taylor Wasmundt and Makenzie Matthews each contributed four points as well, Vicky Corona scored three and Katie Green added a pair to the winning total. Wasmundt had four take-aways and five assists and Matthews had four steals and three rebounds.
Naselle shot a blistering 25-49 from the field for 51 percent and they were 9-15 from the line for 60 percent, while Valley was 10-33 for 30 percent from the floor and the home team converted on only one of six from the charity stripe.
The girls came more focused, played aggressively and didnt lose that intensity. Our offense didnt force too many things and as a result we played very well at that end, coach Russ Hickman said. It was senior night. We honored Taylor, Nicole, and Haleigh and Kaelee Dearmore. It was an emotional night for the ladies.
The Comets are now 9-2 in the Pacific League and 14-5 for the year. The Lady Vikings drop to 3-7 in the Pacific and 7-11 for the season. The Comets junior varsity whiffed on a last-second shot and dropped a 32-31 heartbreaker. Green scored 13, Kayti Nelson six, Haley Pine four, Kirsten Scrabeck three, Mary Wirkkala and Christina Carter two each, and Karianne Condon one point.
