Comets cruise past Wishkah

ABERDEEN — The Comets continued their tear through the Coastal League in a Tuesday, Oct. 20 victory at Wishkah Valley. After making mistakes against lesser competition in recent weeks, the Comets played a crisp match against the Loggers for a 25-20, 25-10, 25-13 win.

Amelia Tutu’u got three kills on the Comets’ first five points as they took a 7-0 lead. Wishkah fought back, cutting the lead to 21-18. Ellie Chapman hit it right on the back line for a 23-18 lead. She finished the set with a low line drive to the back row for another kill.

Chapman opened the second set with a hit straight across the Loggers’ front row for a kill. Hailey Weston served two straight aces for a 6-1 lead. Holly Disch spiked the ball straight down for the next point, then won another battle at the net for an 8-1 lead. Three aces from Taylor Gudmundsen opened up the lead further. Tayler Ford followed with a leaping spike to make it 16-4. Ellie Chapman dove for a dig and made a solid pass, leading to another Ford kill for an 18-5 lead, and the Comets easily took the set.

Weston served another ace right down the sideline early in the third set. Disch followed with another spike. Ellie Chapman called for a high set from Taylor Gudmundsen and slammed it down for a 5-1 lead. Weston followed with another ace. Gudmundsen found Disch for a kill to make it 8-1.

The Loggers cut the lead to 10-8, but the Comets turned back their comeback attempt. Disch got another set from Gudmundsen and redirected the ball for a kill. Gudmundsen followed with back-to-back aces for a 14-8 lead. Disch again spiked a ball straight down to win the next point. As Naselle closed in on victory, Gudmundsen had a strong hit that sent Wishkah’s player back for an over-the-shoulder bump attempt, which missed. That gave the Comets a 23-13 lead. Weston finished off the match with her fifth ace right on the sideline.

Gudmundsen also had five aces, along with 20 assists. Ford had six aces, seven digs and four kills. Chapman had eight kills, six digs and three aces. Disch dominated at the net with five kills and three blocks.

Taylor Gudmundsen had 32 assists as the Comets won at Oakville 25-12, 25-16, 25-10 on Oct. 20. The Comets improved to 11-1 overall and 7-0 in the Coastal League, moving closer to their second straight 10-0 Coastal League season. Ellie Chapman had 11 kills and eight digs. Kyryn Jacot served six aces. Hailey Weston added five aces, six digs and three kills. Holly Disch had six kills. Amelia Tutu’u contributed five kills and only one hitting error.
