SEATTLE - Traveling to the big city on a Thursday night must have been agreeable to the Naselle Comets football team, as they not only beat the Seattle Lutheran Saints, they also rang up the most points a Comets team has scored in years, if not in the team's history, by clobbering the Saints 52-30. One thing is for certain, it made the long bus ride home seem a lot shorter than it was.
In scoring that many points, many folks got into the action. Foremost among the Naselle scorers was quarterback Kyle Burkhalter who scored on two long runs of 68 and 70 yards. Kyle gained 233 yards on 15 carries in his offensive highlight show, but he wasn't alone in his offensive heroics.
Freshman Colton Gilbert had a touchdown earned on 79 yards rushing in 15 carries. Freshman Alan Erickson scored twice as he gained 59 yards. Senior captain Tony Ruch added a touchdown and 40 yards rushing. To provide some variety, freshman Austin Burkhalter picked up a defensive TD by returning one of his two interceptions 38 yards for a score.
The Comets exploded for 30-second quarter points when they scored four touchdowns to go in at the half leading 36-12. Coach Robin Andrea said, "The offensive line did a great job. Everyone got involved. Some of the Seattle Lutheran scores were made when we gave them the short field."
The Comets offensive line and running backs so dominated the offense that the Comets gained 466 yards rushing. Andrea singled out Tony Fletcher on defense as Fletcher recovered a fumble and had two sacks and Auin Burkhalter for his two interceptions.
The Comets entertain the Raymond Seagulls, who won their first game of the season last week, in their Pacific League season opener this Friday night on Naselle's Rueben Penttila Field.
