ASTORIA - Naselle outscored Knappa in every quarter and saved their best for last as the Comets piled on a 17-point fourth period on their way to a convincing 41-25 victory over the Lady Loggers, thereby earning third place in the Vince Dulcich Christmas Tournament in Astoria Saturday afternoon.
The Comets blazed to a 9-1 advantage in the first seven minutes of the contest and never were thwarted. Sophomore Taylor Wasmundt led Naselle with 14 points and she was the recipient of four assists in the fourth period from Nicole Tarabochia. Emily Green also dished out four assists for the Comets in the fray. Nicole Laney and Tarabochia contributed six points and three steals apiece and the scrappy point guard Laney was credited with five rebounds. Shelby Leeland led the Comets with seven boards.
Nine Naselle players scored and the Comets forced 22 turnovers to a miniscule seven miscues of their own. The war on the boards was even at 41-41 and the Lady Loggers were flagged for 19 fouls to but 15 for the Washington team. Shooting was at a premium as the Comets held Knappa to a frigid 9-45 from the field for 20 percent, while connecting on 15 of 54 for only 28 percent accuracy. The Comets were 11-20 from the line (55 percent) and Knappa was 7-15 (47 percent). No three-point tries found their mark for either team in the game.
Naselle is now 3-5 on the season and 1-1 in Pacific League play, while the hapless Lady Loggers have yet to log a victory in seven tries. The Comets are slated to visit Montesano for yet another non-league tilt Jan. 2 before taking on Northwest Christian there Jan. 9 in their next Pacific League tussle.
