OAKVILLE - A strong fourth quarter provided the boost that the Naselle Comets girls basketball team needed to beat the Oakville Acorns 40-31 in a Pacific League game played in Oakville Thursday, Jan. 22.
Going into the final eight minutes NHS only had a 3 point, 24-21, lead, but they outscored the Acorns 16-10 in the fourth period to claim the win. The win gave the Comets girls three wins in their last four games and boosted the Comets' league record to 5-5 and 5-9 overall.
Naselle got a strong individual game from Kelli Revis who scored 19 points and pulled down 9 rebounds. Katie Klinger was just out of double figures with 9 points. Annie Herrold grabbed 13 rebounds while Toni Abbott pulled down 9 caroms and Brittanie Vaughn had 8 boards, giving four Comets a total of 39 rebounds.
NHS jumped out a "Woolworth Special" first period, leading 10-5 after one. However, the two middle quarters did not go so well for the Naselle team. They were outscored 6-4 in the second period and the teams battled to a 10-10 standoff in the third stanza. The results were a 14-11 Naselle lead at the half and a 24-21 Naselle lead after three periods. That set up the final quarter where the Comets' 16-10 advantage propelled them safely to their 40-31 win.
