Lady Hyaks come from behind to nip Comets 32-28

OYEHUT — “We let one slip through our fingers tonight,” coach Russ Hickman said after the Comets lost 32-28 at North Beach High School Dec. 11.

The Comets set a record that can never be broken, as they held the Lady Hyaks to no points in the first quarter. North Beach came back with 13 points in the pivotal second quarter to trail by only 17-13 at halftime.

The third period was the time the Comets let the ballgame slip through their fingers and into the Lady Hyaks’ basket as they gave up 10 straight points to only one basket of their own. North Beach was able to hold on for the win in the final period as each team dropped in four points.

Makenzie Matthews and Kirsten Scrabeck were both saddled to the bench during the second period after picking up their third foul each.

“Part of it was their defense and part of it was our inconsistency to run the plays” said Hickman.

The Comets were able to close the gap to only two points with a minute to go in the third period, but the Lady Hyaks closed out the game by making nine free throws and a three-point shot from beyond the arc.

For the fifth consecutive game Katie Green led the Comets in scoring with a game-high 15 points. Matthews and Kayti Nelson added four points, Haley Pine tallied three and Scrabeck rounded out scoring with two points.
