MORTON - Mistakes cost them - the game as it turned out - as the Naselle Comets could not stop the Morton Huskies offense after giving up the ball in scoring territory. The Comets lost the Cen-Pac League football game 24-13 last Friday on the Morton field. The Comets offense scored two touchdowns but the NHS defense gave up four scores after the Huskies got the ball with excellent field position. The Comets record fell to 0-5, 0-3 in league.
Assistant coach Jeff Eaton said, "It was our best defensive night of the year, but we had too many turnovers. We put ourselves in some terrible situations with fumbles and two interceptions on our end of the field."
The Comets trailed 7-12 at the half after Morton had scored twice and Naselle had responded with a 52 yard pass from Robin Andrea to Sean Houghton. Exchange students Tak Soto kicked the extra point and the Comets were right back in the hunt.
Coach Matt Scrabeck said, "Our kids were not blocking well until the second half but then they began blocking better and we picked up some yards. Cody Davis had one of his best games as he ran hard and scored our second touchdown."
The touchdown by Davis countered part of the Huskies two second half scores as the Comets went home with the loss.
Aoy Marion caught two passes for 12 yards and Houghton caught two for 64 yards. Derek Johnson led the Naselle defenders with eight unassisted tackles and four assisted tackles from his inside linebacker's position.
The Comets host the Mossyrock Vikings in Cen-Pac League game this Friday on Rueben Penttila Field. It will be senior night for the Comets seniors. Naselle has also added a JV game at Amanda Park against Lake Quinault on Monday, Oct. 21. The game will be an eight-man game as that is the league that Lake Quinault plays in.
