NASELLE - The Oakville Acorns were "just what the doctor ordered" to allow the Naselle Comets to win their first boys basketball game of the year Thursday, Dec. 12. The Comets burned the Acorns 67-31 in a Pacific League game played in the Naselle gym. The Naselle record climbed to 1-3 for the season, 1-1 in league games.
Coach Ryan Bjornsgard said, "It was nice to get our first win. Sean (Houghton) did a good job of getting us into our offense. Oakville started out by scoring the first five points before we got rolling. We had an 11 point run that got us started."
Houghton led the Comets with 22 points and seven assists and he added five rebounds and four steals. Two other Comets, Tom Gradt and Jordan Petrovich added 11 points apiece. Robin Andrea was just out of double figures with nine points. Gradt and Derek Johnson each had eight rebounds, Andrea added seven.
The Comets win came on a combination of improved shooting (NHS shot 42 percent from the field) and a stingy defense. The Comets "D" held the Acorns to single digit scoring through three quarters, only allowing the visitors to score 13 points in the fourth quarter mop-up time.
Naselle led 18-10 early in the second period when they went on an 11-2 run to lead 29-12 at the half. The second half continued the Comets dominance as they outscored the Acorns 38-19 in the final sixteen minutes for their 67-31 win.
The NHS JVs won 63-27 with Evan Hendrickson scoring 15, Greg Queener 11, Dan White 10 and Ricky Johnson 9. The Comets JVs record climbed to 2-1 overall, 2-0 in league.
