NASELLE The Comets out-hit North Beach 14-6, but lost a 17-10 Pacific 2B League contest Tuesday, May 3 at home that eliminated Naselle from post-season play. Everything that could go wrong did, and then some more things went wrong, coach Bekah Wirkkala lamented as the Comets committed nine errors and walked nine.
With two league games remaining Naselle could tie the Lady Hyaks with a 4-4 record, but North Beach swept the two-game series to earn the second Pacific League berth to district behind Ocosta, who finished at 8-0.
The Lady Hyaks scored six runs in the first inning, only one of which was earned to set the tone for the game. Ciara Sandell doubled and scored on a fielders choice for the Comets. In the second Nicole Tarabochia double, Cassie Van Dusen singled and both scored on a series of passed balls and wild pitches. Naselle scored again in the third on Karianne Condons single to close the gap to 6-4.
North Beach then scored 11 runs in three innings with the aid of only three hits, to go up 17-6 going into the bottom of the sixth. Sandells third double of the game, a walk, and three Lady Hyak errors prolonged the contest as Naselle made the score 17-8 and avoided the mercy rule.
In the bottom of the seventh the Comets scored twice on singles by Kirsten Scrabeck, Amber Wirkkala, and Makenzie Matthews, but it was too little too late as Naselles softball season ended on a ground out to shortstop, trailing 17-10.
Sandell set the table for Naselle as leadoff hitter by slamming three doubles and walking once in five plate appearances. Scrabeck was also 3-4 and Tarabochia had a double and single in four trips to the dish. Condon was also 2-4 and Haleigh See, Wirkkala, Jordan Smith and Matthews also hit safely.
Naselle is now 2-4 in league play and 6-6 for the season. They have league games with 1B Oakville and Wishkah yet to play.
