ILWACO Naselle trailed 15-13 early in the second period and then exploded for the next 23 unanswered points on their way to a convincing 46-27 victory over Morton-White Pass in the opening round of the Ilwaco Holiday Tournament Tuesday, Dec. 28.
We played solid defense in the second and third periods and were patient with the basketball. We are one of those teams that are straddling the fence. We can be really good if we focus on what we are trying to do, but we can also fall apart like we did when they caught up in the second period, coach Russ Hickman said. Haleigh See took care of the basketball well tonight and Nicole Tarabochia is our glue, Hickman praised.
See dished out five assists, scored eight points and hustled for seven rebounds, while Tarabochia added seven points and eight boards. Carley Kitzman had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds and she added four steals. Taylor Wasmundt contributed six points, Kayti Nelson and Ciara Sandell added four each off the bench, and Makenzie Matthews scored a pair.
The Comets burst to a 5-0 lead on Sees trey and her assist to Kitzman and they were up 13-7 after one frame. The second period MWP scored eight straight points to take the lead, but from then on it was all Naselle as they scored the final 17 points of the second quarter and the first six of the second half. The Lady Timberwolves didnt score until 2:36 remained in the third period and their first field goal came with a minute left in the stanza.
Naselle was 19-47 from the field for 40 percent and a sub-par 6-13 from the charity stripe for 46 percent, while the Lady Timberwolves connected on 10-46 from the floor for a mountain-chilled 22 percent and they were 6-10 from the line. The Comets won the battle of the boards 38-32 and turned the basketball over 16 times to 23 for MWP. Fouls were 10 for Naselle and 10 for the Lady Timberwolves.
