NASELLE - The Naselle Comettes are again the Pacific League softball champions, in this case, they are co-champions with the Wishkah Valley Loggerettes, after the Comettes completed a rained out game against the Lake Quinault Elk. The Comettes won the suspended game 16-0 as it was stopped after three innings by the 15 runs ahead rule in a game played Thursday, May 8, on Rueben Penttila Field.

The co-championship happened because the Comettes lost to Wishkah 7-5 in their first game of the season - a game they played without some of their regular players due to its early date in the season.

Since that time, both teams had gone undefeated in league play until Naselle bounced Wishkah 4-1 two days ago. Both Naselle and Wishkah finished their league seasons with 7-1 records.

The game against the Elk was a runaway practically from the opening pitch as pitcher Jordan Varila opened the game by striking out three Elk batters after allowing the first two to get on base with a walk and a single.

The Comettes then jumped out to a seven run lead as four of the first five Naselle hitters scored. Before the inning was over, three more Comettes had crossed the plate. The Comettes were to only get four hits in the shortened game but they earned eight walks and had three batters hit by a pitch. The Comettes also ran wild on the bases with a nearly unbelievable 37 stolen bases.

Varila continued her domination of the Elk hitters as she struck out two Elk in the second and all three hitters in the third. When the Comettes continued their run barrage with nine runs in the second for a 16-0 lead, the umpires stopped the game after Quinault's scoreless third inning.

In a game without much hitting, Lucy Rubio went two-for-two, had seven stolen bases, and scored three runs. Marijane Mobley was two-for-three with six stolen bases, and she scored twice.
