CATHLAMET - The Naselle Comettes outlasted the Cathlamet Mules 3-2 in a non league volleyball match played Tuesday, Sept. 17, in the Mules gym. The game scores were 10-15, 15-8, 15-8, 14-16, and 15-10 as the Comettes handed the Mules their first loss of the season.

The Comettes had to come back from a 0-1 deficit to take a 2-1 lead. The Mules then tied the match at 2-2 before the Comettes scrambled to win the tiebreaker. The win brought the Comettes early season record to 2-1.

The Comettes fell behind early in game one, trailing 5-1 after one complete service rotation. The Mules then built their lead to 1-3 before the Comettes put together a string of seven straight points to trail 11-10. However, the Mules got the serve back and scored the final four points for their 15-10 win.

Games two and three were near duplicates as the Comettes won each game by scores of 15-8. In game two, the Comettes fell behind 6-8 before they rallied for the final nine points in gaining the win. In game three, the Comettes were behind 4-7 before they eventually tied the game at 7. They then outscored the Mules 8-1 to gain the win.

Leading the match 2-1, the Comettes only needed one game to win the match. They didn't get it in the fourth game as the Mules rallied for a tight 16-14 win. The Comettes led 13-10 and then 14-12. However, they could not score the game and match point as the Mules first tied the game at 14, lost the serve, but got the served back without giving up a point. The Mules then scored the final two points for the 16-14 win.

With the match tied at two games a piece, the match was on the line in the fifth game. The Comettes jumped out to a 7-4 lead, saw the Mules come back to trail 11-9. The Comettes then built the lead to a 14-10 advantage before the Comettes scored the game and match point. The 15-10 win gave the Comettes the match three games to two.

Coach Doug Rogers had words of praise for several of his players. He lauded Lucy Rubio for her serving and hitting, including an ace for the final point; Tiffany Pauly for her hitting; Jordan Varila for her setting; Katie Klinger for her serving and setting; and Abbie Smith for her good floor game.

The Comettes JVs lost their match 12-15, 4-15, and 9-15. The Naselle C-squad won their match 15-8, 12-15, and 15-4.

Comettes volleyball team loses to Trojans in Pe Ell

PE ELL - A tough Pe Ell Trojans volleyball team handed the Naselle Comettes a 3-0 loss in a non league volleyball match played in the Lewis County town Thursday, Sept. 19. The Comettes were sent home on game scores of 11-15, 11-15, and 8-15 as they saw their season record drop to 2-2..

Coach Doug Rogers said, "They are a tough team and we just didn't play all that well."

The Comette trailed 7-5 after one complete rotation in game one. The teams were then tied at 11-11 before PL scored the last four points for the win.

In game two, the teams battled to almost a duplicate game and were tied at after one rotation. The Comettes then got a 11-10 lead, only to see the Trojans score the last five points for the win.

In game three, PL jumped out to an 11-8 lead. They then shut the Comettes offense out while scoring the last seven points for the game and match win.

The Comets entertained Cathlamet last night, Tuesday, and their JVs play in the South bend JV Tournament this Saturday.
