NASELLE - The Naselle Comettes continued on route to a league champion-deciding volleyball match, which will have been played by the time that this report is published.
The Comettes remained unbeaten in Pacific League play with an easy 3-0 win over the Oakville Acorns Thursday, Oct. 23, in the Naselle gym. The win gave the Comettes a 6-0 league record, 10-2 overall.
The Comettes and the South Bend Indians are both unbeaten in the Pacific League and they played for the league championship last night, Tuesday, in the Naselle gym. The winner will earn the league's first seed to the district tournament. The loser will go to district as the league's second place team.
The Oakville match was a runaway win for the Comettes with game scores of 15-2, 15-3, and 15-3. The Comettes got excellent serving from four of their servers. Senior Jordan Varila and sophomores Katie Klinger, Amanda Badger, and Annie Herrold all had their serves working. In addition, coach Doug Rogers had praise for the play of seniors Tiffany Pauly, Lucy Rubio and Randi Magnuson.
The Comettes overwhelmed the Acorns in each of the games. The servers dominated in game one. Jordan Varila's serving included three aces as her serves produced eight straight points and an 8-0 lead. The Comettes then built their lead to 12-1 before quickly ending the game at 15-2.
Game two saw the Comettes spread out the action with all six players contributing service points as the setters and hitters got more into the action. Klinger, Badger, and Varila each had an outstanding match in the setting and assists department and they demonstrated that in the second game. For the match, Klinger was credited with 8 assists, Badger with 6, and Varila with 5. The Comettes enjoyed a 10-3 lead after one complete team rotation and then got four of their last five points from two aces by Varila and the final point on an ace from Pauly in their 15-3 win.
Game three featured play by the Naselle subs and again they put the game away early, leading 12-2 after one complete team rotation. The scoring was spread out among seven players as the Comettes completed their 3-0 sweep of the Acorns with a 15-3 win.
The Comettes have their final league contest this week, as they travel to Taholah on Thursday, two days after the South Bend match.
