WARRENTON - The Naselle Comettes stepped up and out - up in size of opponent and out of state - to play a non league game against a combined varsity/JV team from Warrenton on Monday, May 5. The Comettes split the games, losing the opener 17-6 when both teams used more of their regular players, and winning the second game 18-13 when both teams' reserves got in more playing time.
The Comettes hung with the Warriors, through five and a half innings game one as the teams were tied at six going into the bottom of the fifth. But the wheels came off for the Comettes when Warrenton erupted for 11 runs in their sixth inning turn at the plate. Fourteen batters earned four walks, reached on a Naselle error, and had six hits, including a home run, giving the Warriors enough runs for the umps to call the game with two outs in the fifth.
Prior to that Warrenton outburst, Naselle had an early 2-0 lead, were tied at 2-2, led again at 4-2, were tied again at 4-4 and then fell behind 4-6, before tying it again at 6-6. The Warriors then removed all doubt of the outcome with their huge fifth inning.
The Comettes got four hits, from Lucy Rubio with two hits, including a double, and singles by Amanda Badger and Marijane Mobley.
