NASELLE - From this point on in the season, the Naselle Comettes might as well have big targets pinned on their basketball jerseys.

That is bound to happen to a team that has completed the first half of its season with an 11-0 record, is 7-0 in league, and is ranked third in the current Associated Press state girls B basketball poll.

That is where the Comettes found themselves after beating the Pe Ell Trojans 67-49 in a non league game played Monday, Jan. 13, in the Naselle gym. It was the final non-league game for the Comettes this season.

From here on, they are all "counting" games with nine league games facing the Comettes before they have hopes of advancing through the district tournament in order to qualify for state tournament action.

NHS rather methodically put down the Trojans on Monday night. With Nora Darcher (26 game points), Fritha Davern (13), and Tiffany Pauly (12) chalking up double figures, the Comettes blazed off to a sizable lead.

Davern and Pauly each pulled down nine rebounds, while Darcher added six boards and five steals. Lucy Rubio, just out of double figures with nine points, Abbie Smith with five, and the other Comettes provided solid support to the top scorers and rebounders.

Naselle led 23-9 after one quarter. They slowed down their offensive production in the second period but still led 38-26 at the half.

Cranking up their defensive pressure in the third stanza, the Comettes outscored the Trojans 16-7 to lead 54-33 after three periods. Naselle finished the game with a 13-16 fourth quarter to close out their eleventh win of the year 67-49.

If the Comettes and their fans have the urge to start looking too far ahead, the team names of their remaining leaguer opponents - Acorns, Loggers, Owls, Vikings, Indians, and Elk - are all that need to be recalled in order to keep ones attention focused on the task of winning the next game - one game at a time.
