ELMA — The Elma Eagles are a big 1A school and they have a big offensive and defensive line that was the key to the Eagles defeating Ilwaco 56-20, Oct. 18 in a non-league football game.

“They owned us in the trenches and that made a big difference in the game. We played fine for a few plays, but then we would have lapses and that hurt us,” coach Kevin McNulty explained.

Elma scored on their opening possession by marching 64 yards in eight plays. They racked up a 35-0 lead by halftime. First Todd Swinhart scored on a 23-yard run and then on a 57-yard pass from Ryan Collin.

In the second period the Eagles swooped into the end zone on runs of one and 11 yards by Steven Persell and a seven-yard scamper by Collin. Persell connected on seven consecutive point-after kicks and then Cody Sutherby booted the eighth extra point for Elma in the fray.

In the first period Austin Woodby got Ilwaco’s first interception of the season and the Fishermen defense grounded the Eagles on fourth down. However, the Ilwaco offense got off to a slow start, gaining only 17 total yards in the first period. Meanwhile the Eagles piled up much of their 558 yards of total offense in the first two and a half periods.

Ilwaco got rolling in the third period when Eric McMillan ran in for a touchdown from three yards out at the 2:57 mark. The score was set up by McMillan’s 35-yard pass to Hunter Stockfleth. In the fourth period, Ilwaco again scored on a McMillan 15-yard jaunt and Jack Kaino powered over for a two-point conversion.

The Fishermen again scored with 1:33 remaining in the contest from seven yards out. “Every one of our guys got into the game. John Pampalos at guard and defensive end played well. Tommy Odneal and Keishi Thompson ran hard and Riki Thompson played well in the secondary as safety,” coach McNulty praised.

It was a matter of Elma spreading out the defense and quarterback Collin hitting open receivers for 241 yards and then the Eagles’ running backs piling up 317 yards on the ground. Besides Swinhart and Persell, sophomore Tristan Robinette also zipped for a 48-yard touchdown in a reserve role.

Odneal gained 116 yards in 16 carries, Keishi Thompson added 20 in nine totes and McMillan carried for 24 yards in 14 carries. Odneal also caught three passes for 53 yards and Aaron Terry had one reception for four yards from McMillan, who was 5-14 passing.

Ilwaco is now 0-8 for the season and 0-7 in the Trico League, while the Eagles are 4-3 for the year and 3-3 in the Evergreen League.
