WARRENTON - Seniors Anna Gerke in the discus and Jason Huntley in the 300-meter hurdles won first place at a blustery and chilly seven-school track meet in Warrenton Thursday. Gerke twirled the disc 82-feet-11 to win the event and Huntley hit the tape of the 300 hurdles with a winning time of 46:05.
Cameo Ulbricht also scored heavily for the Lady Fishermen finishing second in several events. She claimed second in the 200 in 30:07, second in the 800 in 2:40.19, and second in the 1,500 in 5:35.1. Kenzi Wirkkala, in her first meet of the season, placed fourth in the javelin with a toss of 80-feet-6. The Fishermen boys finished third with 80 points behind Clatskanie with 155 and Warrenton's 104. The Lady Fishermen were seventh with 38 points and Warrenton won the girls' division.
Huntley was fifth in the 100-meter dash in 12:08, fourth in the 110 high hurdles in 18.94 and third in the long jump with a leap of 16-feet-9. Evin LaPlatney placed second in the Oregon version of the mile run with a time of 4:41.24 in the 1,500-meter event. Freshman Brandon Malmstadt was impressive in placing second in the 400 meter race in 56:53. He also ran the 200 and was part of the 4x100 Fishermen relay team that was third and the 4x400 relay squad that placed sixth.
Joining him on Ilwaco's 4x100 relay team were Josh Schenk, Brandon Wilson and Nick Hinojosa and on the 4x400 team were Taylor Odneal, Tanner Widener and Mitch Mortenson. The 4x100 time was 48.49 and the 4x400 time was 4:05.89. Mortenson was fifth in the 3,000 (10:25.66) and eighth in the 1,500 (4:51.53), and Widener was seventh in the 1,500 (4:49.27). Nate Moore earned a fifth place ribbon in the 110 hurdles with a time of 19.75.
In the field events Tyler Starks was sixth in the discus (95 feet), Travis Malmstadt was seventh in the javelin (129-feet-3) and Josh Berteaux placed fifth in the pole vault by clearing 7-feet-6.
Coach Sarah Taylor said, "Anna Gerke did a nice job in the discus to win her first meet of the season and Jason Huntley also got his first win of the year in the 300 hurdles. Travis Malmstadt threw a personal record in the javelin, as did Tyler Starks in the discus." She added, "Brandon Malmstadt continues to be very impressive in the running events and his second place in the 400 is exceptional in that it was his first attempt at the distance at the varsity level. Brandon Wilson also did well on the 4x100 team. Their work at improving their hand-offs is paying off."
Also competing for the Fishermen were Joe Fjeldheim, Kyle Breckinridge, Ryan Edwards, Andy Schott, Zhuang Zhuang Zhoa, Daniel Sloot, Justice Schenk, Seth Sexton, Jesse Hume and Rudy Alvarez. Owen Sutherland was 13th in both the 800 and 1,500, Bobby Richards was 17th in the 1,500 and 18th in the 800 and Eli Schenk finished 18th in the 1,500.
Also competing in the field events for Ilwaco were Dylan Short, Ryan Edwards, Elias Blume, Ismeal Rodriguez-Perez, Zack Wilson, Elliot Marcus, Brendan O'Brien and Beau Morrow. Also competing for the Lady Fishermen were Nicole Meyer, Rissa Gerke and Samantha Wright.
