Fish & Feathers: What's a sablefish?

Practically all halibut fishermen are aware of the rule that states, "No bottom fish (except sablefish) may be landed in Area 1 if a halibut is on board the fishing vessel." People ask me, "What's a sablefish?"

Locally and in the North Pacific they are referred to as black cod, also as butterfish in the U.S., and as blue fish, blue cod and coal cod in England and Canada. In the waters off the Oregon and Washington coasts they are fished for commercially and are very important to the local fishing community.
