KELSO Ross Kukula missed medalist honors by a mere two strokes and Ilwaco placed second as a team to class 4A powerhouse Union in the Southwest Washington Invitational golf tournament on the 6,666-yard Three Rivers Course in Kelso May 12.
Anthony Yoder finished 10th with a score of 78, Clark Wilson was 12th with an 80, Kenneth Sheldon was 13th with an 81, and Ryan Tapio claimed 16th with an 82 in Ilwacos strong showing. The match was the Fishermens final competitive match before they defend their championship at the 1A state tournament May 22 and 23 on the Home Course in Dupont.
We had a great tune-up for state today against some very good players. The greens were a little bumpy so they challenged our short game. Ryan Tapio played as well as he ever has from hole No. 6 through 17 and if it hadnt been for a triple bogey on the last hole hed have had an even better round. Kenneth Sheldon shot a 37 on the back nine and he is playing very strong. Ross Kukula had a great round and could have tied for the lead except for one bad hole, coach Dan Whealdon said.
Union had three of the top five golfers in the 28-man field and Ian Spicer of Union was medalist with a 69. All of the competitors from 11 schools were state-qualifiers, with Ilwaco being by far the smallest school in enrollment.
