RICHLAND - Five young Fishermen set sail for Richland and the State 1A Golf Tournament and Wednesday they came home after bagging their second state championship in three seasons. Ilwaco scored 143 team points to easily out-distance Freeman with 113, defending champion King's with 93.5, and Chimacum with 52.

Freshman sensation Ross Kukula finished third at state with rounds of 69 and 71 for a score of 140. Juniors Ryan Kukula (75-74) and Patrick Whealdon (73-76) tied for tenth place with scores of 149. Freshmen Clark Wilson and Anthony Yoder sealed the state title for the Fishermen by finishing in a tie for fourteenth and twenty-second respectively.

Wilson fired rounds of 75 and 76 for a 151 and Yoder came in with a 75 and an 80 for a 155. Without the pair Ilwaco would have scored 101 points, only good enough for a second place finish like they earned last season. The three Ilwaco freshmen combined for 84 points and the pair of veteran juniors kicked in 59 for Coach Dan Whealdon.
