ILWACO – The Fishermen held off a late surge by Stevenson to earn a 68-58 Trico League victory at Carl Aase Gymnasium Friday, Jan. 21. Ilwaco was up by as much as 31-13 with 2:24 left in the first half and pulled ahead 57-37 with 30 seconds to go in the third period, only to see the Bulldogs snarl back to within 59-54 with 3:14 left in the contest.

“We played some of the younger guys and we may have gotten a little complacent and let Stevenson back into the game. I was confident we would pull it out in the end by controlling the basketball and making free throws and we did,” Coach Kip Meinhardt said.

Kyle Breckinridge scored 19 points predominantly in the paint and also sank a three-point shot to lead the Fishermen. Bobby Byrd added a book end double-double with 15 points and 15 rebounds and Karl Oman added 13 points, 11 assists (many to Breckinridge and Byrd), battled for eight boards, and picked off five steals. Ryan Kukula and Patrick Whealdon putted in eight points apiece and both dished out three assists.

Kasey Plato added four tallies; two coming off a textbook hook shot, and Clark Wilson made a free throw, had a key steal, and grabbed a pair of rebounds in the final frame. Ilwaco was 26-60 from the field for 43 percent and knocked down 12-16 from the line for 75 percent, while the Bulldogs were 21-56 from the floor for 38 percent and sank 10-14 from the stripe for 71 percent.

The Fishermen out-rebounded the guys from the Gorge 45-31, a key statistic in the contest, and committed only four turnovers in the first three periods. The final turnover totals were 10 for Ilwaco and 13 for Stevenson and fouls were even at 16 apiece.

The Fishermen are now 11-4 on the season and 7-2 in Trico play, while the Bulldogs drop to 1-7 in league action and are 3-12 overall.
