Fishermen chop down Elma, Stevenson at Oakridge, Yoder is medalist

Kyle Breckinridge powers a drive down the fairway at number four in Surfside. "Kyle has a good shot to make it to state, but he is our seventh golfer and we only can take to six to district," Coach Dan Whealdon said. "It's a shame because Kyle is just a few strokes behind our number six golfer after about 40 or 50 rounds."<br><I>Photo by KEVIN HEIMBIGNER

ELMA - Sophomore Anthony Yoder was medalist with an even par round of 36 and Ilwaco defeated Elma 201 to 232 in the final Trico League golf match of the season at Oakridge Golf Course near Elma Thursday. Sophomore Clark Wilson and senior Ryan Kukula tied for second with nine-hole rounds of 70, Ross Kukula finished with a 42 and Patrick Whealdon carded a 43.

Ryan Tapio shot a non-scoring, but excellent round of 44 for the Fishermen. Stevenson drove all the way to Elma only to have one of their five players disqualified by playing a "pick up" round so they did not have a team score.

"I was disappointed that we couldn't take our entire squad," Coach Dan Whealdon said. "The Elma athletic director only allowed us to take our top six players because Stevenson decided to play in the match." Ilwaco's Kyle Breckinridge, Dominic Vargas, Marcus Cox and Deforest Bloom were unable to compete in the final regular fall season match because of the decision.

Coach Whealdon said, "Anthony looks to be ready for district. He has played very steady golf and his confidence is improving every week. He has improved the tempo of his swing. For a big, strong guy he has a very nice swing and I am expecting big things from him. Ryan Tapio has also improved a great deal and is playing well, as are the veterans."

Coach Whealdon said of Breckinridge, "Kyle has a good shot to make it to state, but he is our seventh golfer and we only can take to six to district. It's a shame he can't compete because Kyle is just a few strokes behind our number six golfer after about 45 or 50 rounds and we can only take six." Coach Whealdon has the Fishermen compete in a series of league, tournament, and practice rounds to determine the relative placement of the golfers on the team.

Final official round averages for 18 holes for Ilwaco's top seven golfers for the fall season are Patrick Whealdon 73, Ryan Kukula 76, Ross Kukula 77, Yoder 80, Wilson 82, Tapio 88, and Breckinridge 91.
