ILWACO - Ilwaco's stifling help defense and overall team quickness keyed a resounding 60-35 victory over Knappa at Aase Gym Tuesday in non-league basketball action. The Fishermen sprinted to a 19-6 first period lead, however, the Loggers drew to within 30-23 at the half by utilizing full court pressure defense of their own.

Team defense and the poise and ball handling of David Thorne and Kyle Kaine and the exceptional inside passing of post players, Andy Hudkins and Ryan Cadwell helped the Fishermen to a 30-12 run the second half.

In the hot first quarter Hudkins scored two baskets, had two assists, and grabbed four rebounds. Tony Crete scored five points and Ed Guelfi two off the bench and Cadwell rattled home four points and nabbed two steals in the initial frenetically-paced period.

Kaino's three pointer and layup led Ilwaco's scoring in the second half and Rocky Mirelez hit a driving layup to stave off the Knappa run before the half. The Fishermen were four of 14 from the field in the quarter as they seemed to be rushing their shots.

In the crucial third quarter, Ilwaco took control of the game in a big way. The defense allowed one field goal, that coming outside the arc, while the offense poured in 15 points, shooting a blazing 50 percent. Adam Ellsworth and Thorne scored early and Hudkins and Cadwell rolled in 10 points between them in the period.

Guelfi and Kaino hit big hoops in the final stanza and Hudkins scored the final five of his game-high 15 points. Reserves Ryan Gray (three-pointer) and Garret Binion capped the scoring for Ilwaco.

The Fishermen shot 48 percent from the field for the game and their defense held Knappa to a paltry 30 percent. Ilwaco's edge in rebounding, 48-31, was attributed more to hustle than a decided height advantage over the Loggers. Fouls were nearly even, with the locals being called for 16 to Knappa's 14. Neither team shot particularly well from the charity stripe, with Knappa going a miserable 4-13 (31 percent) and Ilwaco 10-18 (56 percent).

The Fishermen, in moving their record to 2-1 on the season, had 15 steals to seven by Knappa. Kaino had the only blocked shot of the game. Hudkins led in rebounds with 11 and Kaino, Cadwell, and Ellsworth grabbed six boards each. The posts, Cadwell and Hudkins, led Ilwaco in assists with four and five, respectively.

In the Junior Varsity game the Fishermen won going away by a score of 56-35. Mirelez lead with 13 points, followed by Jordan Williams with nine and Ryan Gray, Robby Olson, and Crete with eight points each.

The C-squad mastered the Loggers by a 63-29 count, as Mooch Smith and Nick Leonard knocked down 14 points apiece for the winners.
