ILWACO Patrick Whealdon tossed in 21 points, Karl Oman added 16 and Kyle Breckinridge scored 10 to help lead the Fishermen to a 65-48 win over White Salmon at Ilwaco Friday, Jan. 29 in a Trico League contest. Whealdon scored eight of his points in the final period, Ryan Kukula knocked down a three-pointer in the late going, and Oman connected on four straight free throws as Ilwaco out-scored the Bruins 21-9 in the last quarter to ice the victory.
The Fishermen had held a slim 25-23 lead at intermission and were only up 44-39 going into the final frame. Ultra-quick guard Mark Lovrin with 23 points and center Dylan Rabinowitz with 11 inside kept White Salmon within striking distance until Ilwaco was able to pull away 57-48 with 1:45 left in the fray.
The Fishermen then scored the last eight points of the game to win going away. Ilwaco was a sizzling 24-51 from the field for 47 percent, including nine three-pointers, while the Bruins slumbered at 20-57 from the field for 35 percent and only 5-12 from the charity stripe for 42 percent.
Ilwaco won the battle of the boards 38-31 and turned the basketball over 11 times to a mere seven miscues for the guys from the Gorge. Fouls were 10 for Ilwaco and a dozen for White Salmon. Breckinridge had 11 rebounds to go with his 10 points and Oman dished out seven assists, Whealdon passed for four, and Kukula added three assists for the winners.
Kukula chipped in nine points, Bobby Byrd tallied seven with seven rebounds, and Kasey Plato added a bucket. Ilwaco improves to 9-2 in the Trico and they are tied with Kalama for the leagues top rung and their season record is 13-4, while White Salmon falls to 2-9 and they are seventh in the league.
