CLATSKANIE - Second-year Fishermen basketball coach Paul Jarrett continues to be frustrated with his team's overall progress as the summer season draws to a close. A three-day tournament in Clatskanie was typical of Ilwaco's summer as they lost to Toledo and Scappoose on Friday.

"Only five guys showed up and part way through the first game one of our guys turned an ankle. We still only lost by 10 points, but the other teams have substitutes and our guys get tired," Jarrett said. Saturday Knappa defeated Ilwaco "by 49 points" and the Fishermen also lost to Brookings, Ore.

Sunday Ilwaco beat City Christian by forfeit when the Portland squad showed up 40 minutes late according to Jarrett. They then lost to league foe Rochester "by 23 points." Ilwaco did not win a game during the summer league in Longview and had to forfeit their last contest due to lack of players, as well. "I was happy with the effort from the guys who played in the tournament. They played smart and they played hard, but we just ran out of gas," Jarrett explained.

"Kolby Kirby has improved 100 percent and Matt Kaino's aggressiveness on offense is coming along very well," Jarrett praised. "Ryan Blake is getting better and better in the post and Todd Oakes has done well this summer, also. The reason these four guys have improved so much is that they are the only ones who have consistently come to the games and practices."

Ilwaco will host the 11th annual Battle of the Beach Tournament July 6 to 8. The Fishermen will play Toledo at Long Beach gym Friday at 1 p.m. and Rainier at 4 p.m. at Aase Gym in Ilwaco. Saturday the Fishermen take on Adna at 2 p.m. at Aase Gym and play North Beach at 4 p.m. in Long Beach. Each of the 20 teams is guaranteed at least one playoff game on Sunday, with time and place determined by the results of their first four games in pool play. The championship tilt will tip off at 4 p.m. at Ilwaco High School.
