MONTESANO - Ilwaco had difficulty moving the football against an experienced and talented Montesano football team in a jamboree there Monday, but defeated Tenino in a second 20-play scrimmage. Montesano is the favorite to win the Evergreen League title and Tenino is the runner-up preseason pick.
The Bulldogs scored on three of their 10 offensive plays from 40 yards out, while shutting out the Fishermen. Ilwaco's defense stiffened against the Beavers as they held them scoreless. On the ninth Fishermen play Rey Sanchez threw a strike to wide receiver Kolby Kirby and then on the final play again hit him with a pass to account for the mini-game's only touchdown.
Ilwaco's junior varsity also competed against the same two squads at the Montesano jamboree. According to assistant coach Dave Campbell the young Fishermen "hung in there pretty well and played hard" although they were outscored two TDs to none by Montesano and Tenino scored once, while keeping Ilwaco JVs out of the end zone.
The Fishermen open with a game against Winlock at Peterson Field Friday at 7 p.m. Ilwaco defeated the Cardinals in the final cross-over contest of the 2007 season 48-14.
