KELSO Ilwaco won the Southwest Washington Invitational with a three-man score of 221 and Ryan Kukula lost the medalist title in a one-hole playoff Saturday, May 14 in Kelso. Kukula tied Unions Andrew Spicer with a 72, Patrick Whealdon came in fourth with a 74, and Ross Kukula was tied for fifth with a 75 for the Fishermen.
Clark Wilson was 14th with a round of 81 and Anthony Yoder was a stroke behind, firing an 82. The Ilwaco team total of 221 was six strokes better than Unions 227 and first place among 15 schools at the tournament that is a tune-up for state competition.
We are ready to go for state. Mint Valley Course is a tight course, but not as long as DuPonts Home Course that we will compete on at state, coach Dan Whealdon said.
Ryan Tapio, the sixth Fishermen golfer to qualify for state, is seeing marked improvement in his broken middle finger in his left hand and shot a practice round Friday. We should all be ready to go May 24 and 25 in DuPont and be ready to defend our state championship, coach Whealdon said. I have no idea what other teams in the state have done well this spring as it has been so wet that very few rounds have been played.
