KELSO - Jack Whealdon was medalist with a superb 71 and Ilwaco won the Southwest Washington Invitational at Three Rivers Golf Course in Kelso Saturday going away as the Fishermen tuned up for defense of their state 1A golf state title next week in the Tri-Cities.

Whealdon was followed by his brother Patrick, who fired a 74, good enough for fifth place overall among many much larger schools in the tournament. Right behind him were Todd Oakes and Ryan Kukula, who each carded rounds of 75.

"Each of the guys played very solid rounds," coach Dan Whealdon said. "I couldn't have asked for a better effort as we are getting ready for state."

Ilwaco will spend the next several days practicing at Surfside and Astoria Country Club courses and then leave for Richland on Memorial Day to get in a round or two at Richland Pointe Course in preparation to defend the state golf title they won last season.

Ilwaco was first with 81.5 points, using the WIAA scoring method that will be in place at state. Columbia River was second with 46, Camas had 36.5, Capitol of Olympia had 24 and Woodland scored 20 points.
