CASTLE ROCK - Taylor Odneal and Joe Fjeldheim both finished third in their weight divisions and Ilwaco was 11th as a team at the Jim Bair Memorial wrestling tournament at Castle Rock Saturday. Coach Kevin McNulty said, "This was a very competitive tournament with 16-man brackets and comparable to what the 1A regional tournament will be like for District IV."
The Fishermen mat men and women had been off since Dec. 19, but showed no signs of rust from the inactivity. Odneal was third at 160 pounds and Fjeldheim was third at 171 pounds. Dylan Short at 215 pounds and Sergio Nunez at 285 pounds finished the tournament in fourth place. Ryan Edwards at 215 pounds and Rudy Alvarez at 112 pounds were fifth place and finishing sixth were Tanner Bonawitz at 119 pounds, Taylor Zinn at 145 pounds, and Bobby Richards at 189 pounds.
McNulty related, "The experience we gained at this tournament will pay dividends as post-season approaches. Rudy was in what was probably the toughest weight division of the tournament. Tanner, Taylor Zinn, Ryan and Sergio have dramatically improved. Bobby makes each match a battle and gives it his all. Taylor Odneal, Joe and Dylan are very committed, coachable, and have made big strides in their wrestling."
Israel Bautista at 125 pounds was injured during his first match and Josh Berteaux at 130 pounds and Dylan Poe at 145 pounds both competed and won one of three matches before falling just short of earning a place.
