NASELLE - The Naselle Comettes won the game that they needed to win, beating the Wishkah Valley Loggerettes 4-1 in a Pacific League softball classic match Tuesday, May 6, in Naselle. The Comettes win gave them a tie for the league lead with Wishkah, which they would hold if they beat Lake Quinault in their last league game two days later.
The teams then played a non-league game, following the first game, and the Loggers won that game in a 15-12 donnybrook where the Comets out hit their opponents but did not outscore them. With the win and the loss, the Comettes league record climbed to 5-1 and 9-5 overall.
In the classic first game, each team scored in the first inning, with Naselle earning a 3-1 lead. Each team then went scoreless until the Comettes added a single run in the sixth to earn their 4-1 win.
Pitcher Jordan Varila twirled a two hitter against the Loggers, while striking out 11 and walking three. Varila also went three-for-three at the plate with a double and two singles. Lucy Rubio had two hits, including a double and a triple.
When the Comettes scored their three runs in the first inning, two of those runs came after there were two outs. Both pitchers then settled in and no runs were scored for the next five and a half innings.

The second Naselle-Wishkah game was nearly the exact opposite of the opener.
Wishkah opened the game with a six run first inning and the Comettes could never catch them. Trailing 9-0 in the fourth, Naselle got closer with a five run inning, but the Loggers matched them run for run the rest of the way.
Holly Davis went two-for-five with a double, Amanda Badger was two-for-four, and Lucy Rubio was one-for-two with a double, to lead the Naselle hitters who pounded out 10 hits compared to the Loggers four hits.
