STEVENSON - Ilwaco vaulted to a 30-12 half-time lead at Stevenson, then held off a late charge by the Bulldogs to post a 54-45 victory in a Trico-League basketball game Friday. With the win, the Fisherman ran their season record to 7-3 and more importantly go to 2-0 in league action.
Solid scoring and rebounding from Andy Hudkins and Ryan Cadwell helped Ilwaco to build their big first-half lead, as did hustling team defense by the entire squad, as they forced 23 Bulldog turnovers to 18 for the Fishermen.
A Stevenson comeback closed the scoring to 41-45 in favor of Ilwaco with 2:14 left in the game. From then on, point guard David Thorne hit a big basket and a foul shot and Kyle Kaino calmly sank six consecutive free throws during crunch time to help the Fishermen to a 9-3 run the final two minutes of the contest.
Ilwaco was called for a mere 13 personal fouls, while the home team was buzzed for 23. The Fishermen were 12-24 for only 50 percent from the free throw line, however Stevenson bagged a paltry three of five foul shots and the nine-point difference proved to be the key to the contest.
Ilwaco connected on 21 of 52 shots from the field (40 percent), going oh-for-nine from beyond the three-point arc. Stevenson was 19-53 from the court (36 percent), but out-rebounded the Fishermen 35-34.
Kaino led Ilwaco scorers with 15, followed by Hudkins with 14, Thorne with nine, and Cadwell with nine points. Kaino handed out four assists, Cadwell and Hudkins each corralled 10 rebounds, and Dustin Starr had five steals to lead the Fishermen attack.
Bulldog Erik Pruitt, scored 16 points and led his team in rebounding with seven, but turned the ball over 10 times in defeat.
Ilwaco will host White Salmon's Columbia High School on Friday. There was no junior varsity contest at Stevenson and it will be varsity-only games against the Bruins as well due to travel considerations.
