SEASIDE Tayler Odneal at 160 pounds and Ryan Edwards in the 215-pound class both placed second for Ilwaco in the 16-team Pacific Rim Wrestling Tournament at Seaside Friday and Saturday, Jan. 21 and 22. Hunter Stockfleth claimed fourth place at 112 pounds and Isrrael Bautista (119) and Josh Berteaux (130) finished fifth in the event that featured schools almost all larger than Ilwaco.
We competed quite well at Seaside and had the opportunity to mix it up with wrestlers from much larger schools. We have had a couple of injuries along with some skin issues this week that kept some of the guys from wrestling. We are hoping to be healed up for our Beach Brawl wrestling tournament this Saturday (Jan. 29), where Ilwaco will be hosting 14 other teams, coach Kevin McNulty said.
Hunter did a nice job and continues to improve. He is a solid wrestler on his feet and is working on his bottom wrestling technique. Isrrael battled through a couple of injuries to place well in a tough weight class. Josh did his best wrestling of the season and has made real improvement and is becoming more under control, McNulty praised.
Tayler wrestled very consistently, but ran into a machine of an opponent in the finals. Ryan had his best tournament of his career. He ran into the defending state champion from Astoria in the finals and lost, but was very excited about his performance.
Saturday there was a consolation tournament held for those who were put out during the preliminary rounds on Friday or who did not enter until Saturday. Each wrestler was placed in a four-person group and wrestled three matches. Keishi Thompson, Raven Rogers, and Owen Sutherland each won their brackets and Ben Ahlin, Adam Hernandez and Corbin Sutherland placed second in theirs.
