KALAMA — League-leading Kalama extended Ilwaco’s losing streak to six games Friday evening, defeating the Fishermen 67-40 at home. Ilwaco (3-5 league) has now dropped four-straight league games.

Coach Kip Meinhardt said the Chinooks “methodically” wore the Fishermen down as the game progressed. Meinhardt said the Chinooks have a quick team and work the ball around on offense, which forced the Fishermen out of their zone defense and into a man-to-man.

Corey Dunn had a big game for the Fishermen, scoring 13 points and pulling down five rebounds.

Kasey Plato had eight points and four boards. Ryan Tapio and Clark Wilson also grabbed four rebounds each.

Rockets come through

late to win 47-44

ILWACO — A strong defensive effort and 19 points from junior wing Clark Wilson wasn’t enough last Tuesday evening as the Ilwaco High School boys lost 47-44 to Castle Rock in Trico League basketball action.

“We executed our game plan and shut Will Dolan down, but we missed too many shots,” said Ilwaco coach Kip Meinhardt.

Dolan, the Rockets top player, was held to a mere five points, hitting just two shots from the floor in the game.

The Fishermen played spirited defense in the first half with Kasey Plato pulling down seven rebounds — five of them coming in the opening eight minutes.

“I was able to get good positioning on rebounds and got some buckets off them,” the senior post said. Plato ended the game with eight points

After taking a 14-9 lead after the opening quarter the Fishermen were held to nine points in the second frame while the Rockets answered with 16, to tie the score 23-23 at halftime.

Wilson was red-hot from the floor in the third quarter scoring 13 of the Fishermen’s 15 points, including three from three point range.

Heading into the final quarter of play, Ilwaco held a narrow 38-37 lead.

Cale Johnson tied the score hitting 1-for-2 from the freethrow line, but a Plato basket put Ilwaco back in front 40-38 with 5:06 remaining in the game. That bucket proved to be the last time the Fishermen would hold the lead.

Johnson hit a 3-point basket to put the Rockets back on top and followed with a 2-for-2 effort from the charity stripe good for a 43-40 advantage at the 2:53 mark.

A 3-point basket from Ryan Tapio shaved the margin to a single point, 45-44 with 1:19 remaining, but that would be as close as the Fishermen would get.

Trailing 47-44 the Fishermen had two opportunities to tie the game in the final minute, but three-point attempts from Tapio and Wilson failed to find the mark.

Kukula was the second player in double figures for Ilwaco with 11 points.

Johnson scored a game-high 20 points for Castle Rock and teammate Austin Moore had 14.
