LWACO - The Lady Fishermen parlayed a 22-point fourth quarter into a 53-40 victory after trailing 38-37 until the 4:06 mark of the final period in a Trico League girls' basketball game in Ilwaco Tuesday, Jan. 4. All five starters scored in the final period to earn Ilwaco sole possession of first place in the eight-team league.
Elleigh Kaino found Kenzi Wirkkala open under the bucket for a layup to put the Lady Fishermen ahead and then Ilwaco went on a 16-2 tear to finish the rock-em-sock-em affair with the victory. Sydney Ward's trey with two minutes left gave the Lady Fishermen a 49-38 edge and free throws from Kenzi Wirkkala and Kaino and a pair from Alexa Wirkkala sealed the deal during the final minute of play.
Kenzi Wirkkala worked for a double-double as is her custom with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Alexa Wirkkala tallied 13 and her and Kady Kirby, who had ten points, each snagged five steals apiece. Kaino also knocked down 10 points, including two key buckets as the 30-second clock was about to expire. Four Lady Fishermen were in double-figures in scoring and Ward added six on a pair of treys.
Ilwaco was 16-50 from the field for 32 percent and 16-28 from the foul line for 57 percent, while LaCenter was 17-47 from the floor for 36 percent, but only made 5-13 from the charity stripe for 38 percent. The Lady Wildcats out-rebounded Ilwaco by a resounding 48-28 margin, but they turned the basketball over 33 times to Ilwaco's 17. Fouls were 11 for the home team and 19 for LaCenter.
