NASELLE - In Chinook Jargon the word "hyak" means to hurry or move swiftly and that's precisely what the North Beach Lady Hyaks did Jan. 13 in Naselle. They hyaked (hurried swiftly) to a 12-4 advantage at the end of the first quarter and made that lead stand up as they defeated Naselle in a Pacific 2B League game 44-41 at Lyle Patterson Gym.
"We've been starting slow the whole year," lamented Naselle coach Bob Torppa. "But we played hard in the last three quarters. North Beach has some big and tall girls, and my girls just aren't that tall or big." The Comets nemesis of poor shooting raised its ugly head again Tuesday as Naselle shot only 23 percent from the field, going 16-70 and 44 percent from the foul line by making 8-18.
Torppa said, "We rebounded well and had seven blocked shots, but then there were a lot of missed shots to rebound." The Comets hustled to pull down 42 boards as they matched the Lady Hyaks total. Naselle had 16 turnovers to 20 throwaways for North Beach. The Lady Hyaks weren't much better from the field, sinking 15-52 (29 percent) and also made 44 percent of their foul shots, going 11-25.
Nicole Laney and Emily Green each scored 13 points to lead Naselle, but their total was nearly offset by Tahnee McCrory's 25 points, including a late three-point basket in the waning seconds that kept the Lady Hyaks ahead until the final buzzer. Laney had an exceptional game at point guard, pulling down eight rebounds, snagging four steals, dishing out four assists and going 4-9 from the field and 5-8 from the line. Green was a "one person wrecking crew on defense" according to Torppa as she had six steals and the Comets' only field goal from beyond the arc.
"I was proud of our effort, especially the final three quarters, but we just dug too big of a hole and couldn't find our way out. Our last three league games have been like that," Torppa concluded. The Lady Hyaks are 7-4 on the season and 3-0 and a half game behind Pacific League leader Raymond who is 4-0, while Naselle is 1-3 in league play and 3-8 on the campaign.
