CASTLE ROCK They say timing is everything and for Ilwaco it was a lousy time to get cold. We had our worst shooting night of the year, coach Kip Meinhardt lamented as the Fishermen dropped a 50-42 playoff game to Ridgefield for second place in the Trico League. The game was played at Castle Rock Friday, Feb. 5.
The loss means that the Fishermen will now host a district play-in game against either Montesano or Tenino Tuesday, Feb. 8 with the loser of that games season coming to an end.
Ilwaco trailed most of the evening, but did take a brief one-point lead in the fourth period. Poor foul shooting (6-12), a Fishermen strength all year, helped doom their efforts to maintain the advantage and a late surge gave the Spudders the gravy game.
Karl Oman tallied half of Ilwacos points, scoring 21 and Kyle Breckinridge had a double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds. Bobby Byrd added eight points and Ryan Kukula chipped in a three. Only four Spudders found the hoop as well, as they were led by Sam Landerholms 17 and Mike Potters 16.
Ilwaco and the Spudders had tied for second in the league with 10-4 marks and had split their two games during the season with the Fishermen winning 66-63 at home and losing 61-53 there. Ilwaco had averaged over 63 points per game for their 20-game regular season. They are now 15-6 on the year.
