ILWACO - Lady Fishermen golf, while small in numbers, is long on potential and experience according to rookie coach, Karl Johnson.

Four juniors, all who have competed at the varsity level last season for Ilwaco, make up the backbone of the six-girl team that will do battle in the Trico-League.

Megan Saunders and Jennifer Noonan were the top two scorers for last season's team and both competed at district. Lindsey Hylton and Ali Daulton also saw plenty of varsity action last year on the links for the Lady Fishermen and had success in the 1A League.

Elaina Erola, a sophomore, and freshman Jenny Van Over are new to the team and new to the sport, according to Johnson, but one of them was assured of being on the five-person team when Ilwaco began match play Tuesday against Hoquiam at home.

The Lady Fishermen will use Surfside Golf Course again as their home and will host Ridgefield April 3 after visiting Montesano April 1. Johnson brings experience to his new position, having competed three years as a golfer at Coe College in Iowa and having coached as an assistant four seasons at Tipton High School in Iowa before coming to the Peninsula.

Johnson said, "Iowa was too cold for my wife in winter and too warm for me in the summer. The weather here is just right." He was hoping for more dry weather so his charges could get in more practice rounds, however.
