ILWACO — Marcos Mendoza is off to a very hot start to the track season. In three meets he has seven top three finishes, including five firsts, and set two new personal records (PR). This included a big win in the 1,600 meter race at Thursday’s home meet, where he took two seconds off his previous best time, finishing in 5:04.65.

“It was a good PR and just a good race, said Mendoza. “It was a lifetime PR. It’s a big confidence builder. I don’t know, this year I’ve just been feeling it. Just have a lot of energy lately — something that was missing maybe when I was younger.”

He said his goal is to break the five-minute mark in the race, something he expects to do this season.

“I feel at the rate I’m going right now, it’s a pretty reasonable goal. It’s definitely what I’m waiting for right now.

Mendoza also placed third in the 800, behind teammate Seth Sonntag, who won in a time of 2:12.41, an 11 second improvement on his PR.

Speaking of setting new personal records, Naselle sophomore Shon McEneny destroyed three of his in one day, putting up new bests in shot put, discus and javelin, placing in the top three in two of them. McEneny topped his PR in the javelin by 18 feet to take second place, and added 4.6 feet to his PR in discus on his way to third in the event. He also placed fifth in the shot put with a throw of 35-feet-10.5, a three inch improvement.

“Threw a 158 [feet] today [in javelin]. It’s just the form,” he said. McEneny’s previous best came at state last year where he threw 140 feet. “I’ve just been working on technique and planting and stuff.”

IHS sophomore Makenzie Kaech continues to improve in her first year of high school track, taking first in the triple jump, third in javelin and second in shot put — all with new PR’s.

Ilwaco junior Charity Fleck continues to be red hot, taking first in the 100, 200 and 400 meter races Thursday. Fleck, who has taken first in every event she has competed in so far this season, also helped the 4x400 team — featuring Fleck, Eliza Bannister, Ebby McMullen and Anessa Woodby — take first in a time of 4:29.69.

McMullen also placed first in the long jump with a distance of 14-feet-6, and second in the 100 hurdles in a time of 16.81. Naselle’s Ellie Chapman placed third in 100 hurdles, third in long jump and won the high jump, clearing 4-feet-6.

IHS sophomore Eliza Bannister was once again a multi-event winner, taking first in the girls 800 and 1,600 meter races and, trying something new, too second in the triple jump. Ilwaco senior Riki Thompson won the javelin with a throw of 165-feet-3, and was fifth in the long jump.

Ilwaco’s Ryan Schenk placed first in the boys 100 in a time of 24.30, and was second in the triple jump with a distance of 39-feet-3.5. Naselle’s Cody Kirkman continues to be a force in the throwing events, placing second in discus with a throw of 107-feet-11, and fourth in the shot put, clearing 36-feet-3. Ilwaco’s Alec Bell placed second in shot put with a distance of 38-feet-4, and was fourth in discus.

Ilwaco’s Ben Brownlee finished second in the 3,200 in a time of 11:41.85, and had the fifth best triple jump distance, 35-feet-0.5. Teammate Alex Kaino placed second in the 300 hurdles in a close race down the stretch, in 43.80.

Naselle junior Amelia Tutu’u took second in the 300 hurdles in 1:00.56, and was fourth in the 100 hurdles. Teammate Sophie Scrabeck took first in the girls pole vault, clearing 6-feet-6, and was fifth in javelin.
