RIDGEFIELD - Ilwaco varsity golfers dropped a squeaker 180-181 at Ridgefield Tuesday to run their record in dual matches to 5-1. Coach Dan Whealdon wasn't overly concerned, saying, "This setback may actually work to our benefit. The match was good experience at playing under pressure and it may help us focus on some things we still need to get sharp on."
Christiaan Thorne led Ilwaco with a 42, trailing the medalist from the Spudders by three strokes. Peter Gaynor finished with a 43, David Thorne carded a 46, and Adam Ellsworth rounded out the scoring with a 50. Ryan Gray completed his round just out of the team scoring with a 51.
"Our kids continue to drive very well, but this course had many water and other hazards that proved to be tricky," Whealdon stated. "This course is more difficult than the one we will be competing on in District."
At practice the Fishermen worked strictly out of the sand, a common commodity at the beach, and on aspects of their short game, practicing for District play, according to Whealdon. "Our goal now is to get the team ready for League and District Oct. 18 and 19."
