ILWACO - Ilwaco volleyball coach Grant Chinn has announced his eight varsity players for the first match against highly-touted Woodland. The contest will be a Trico-League match and will be there Thursday.
Chinn says, "As setter, Heather Hocking will be our leader on the court." The senior brings experience, talent, and the will to win to the position. Chinn has tabbed junior, Brittany Fox as his middle-blocker, another key position. Katie Hazen is a capable backup at both setter and middle-blocker, according to the coach. Hazen possesses a hard to find combination of skills to be able to excel at both positions.
At outside hitter for the Lady Fishermen will be Nicole Adams and Mary Margaret Tomberlin, both talented and hard working girls, according to Chinn. Argelia Mendez is the defensive specialist. Chinn has tabbed Rachael Zimmerman and Amanda Faggard as versatile players, as well as defensive specialists.
"We are gelling as a team because the ladies have worked hard and at practice they really are having fun," Chinn noted. "The players seem to really enjoy each other's company. I'm very happy with the team chemistry."
A total of 20 volleyball athletes make up the varsity and junior varsity squads for coaches Chinn and assistant Laurie Hazen. After the Lady Fishermen visit Woodland Thursday, they will host Ridgefield Tuesday, Sept. 17.
