SURFSIDE - Peter Gaynor fired a round of 41 and tied David Thorne for medalist honors as Ilwaco defeated Woodland at Surfside in varsity golf Thursday. The Fishermen improved their record to 3-0, as they ran away from the Beavers 174 to 193.
Christiaan Thorne came in to the clubhouse with a score of 43 and Adam Ellsworth rounded out the scoring for the Fishermen by carding a 49.
Nick King, bothered by a back problem, came in off the pace as the fifth varsity golfer. Ryan Gray shot an outstanding 46 and is "much improved" and freshman, Michael Lambert, toured the course in 48 strokes and is making remarkable strides with his game, having started the sport just last spring, according to Coach Dan Whealdon.
"The team really played well against Woodland. We have several guys pushing for varsity positions. I go by average score and Ryan Gray and Michael Lambert are making it interesting," said Whealdon.
The Fishermen's match with Montesano that was postponed last Tuesday will likely be made up as part of a three-way event at Hoquiam, but the schedule has not been finalized. Ilwaco was to play Hockinson this Tuesday and will host highly touted Stevenson Thursday at the Surfside Course.
"Stevenson will likely be our number one rival. This should be a great match for the fans to watch," predicted Whealdon.
