SPANAWAY The Ilwaco Fishermen golf team won its fourth consecutive class 1A state championship at Spanaway Lake Golf Course May 22 and Ross Kukula won the individual state title for the second straight year.
Kukula led after the first day with a score of 71 and won medalist honors going away by finishing with a 68 on the second day. Clark Wilson tied for fourth place with scores of 75 and 77 for a total of 148. Anthony Yoder improved from his 80 on the first day of the tournament to come around with a 76 Wednesday to finish in 11th place, one stroke from finishing in a tie for eighth.
All three are seniors and all three have been major contributors for the four state championships Ilwaco has won on the links during their high school careers. Sophomore Kenneth Sheldon, who missed scoring points last season by a single stroke, came through with rounds of 81 and 83 and his 164 tied him for 25th among the 83 golfers who began the tournament May 21.
Ross made some clutch putts yesterday and birdied five of the last nine holes. Clark played fantastic golf throughout and was very consistent. Anthony was happy to again earn a place and I expect him to play a great final round. Kenneth was excited to make the cut and I know he will score well for us on Wednesday, coach Dan Whealdon said the evening before the finals.
This is a tight course with a lot of big old-growth firs lining the fairways, so we have to play well to win. Lynden Christian has a solid team and also has four players in the final day of the tournament, so we know we will have to play under control to win.
Ilwaco has won five of the last six class 1A state golf titles and seven consecutive District IV championships.
