SEASIDE — Goals from Elle Personius, Sunny Kemmer and Erika Glenn lifted Ilwaco to a 3-1 Tuesday, Oct. 16 victory over Seaside’s junior varsity team.

Personius, Ilwaco’s leading scorer, faked left and attacked straight down the middle and scored midway through the first half. The left-footed Personius said she has worked recently on a more versatile game.

“I usually come from the left side. But I’ve started to try to use my non-dominant right foot to beat them on the inside, and then I can still kick the goal with my left foot,” she said. The fake-out and some fast dribbles through traffic gave took her on a straight path to the goal, creating an easy shot.

Glenn made a pass ahead that set up her forwards, Personius and Kemmer, in good scoring position. Personius assisted Kemmer for the goal, putting Ilwaco ahead 2-0. Shortly afterward, Glenn, trailing the play, received a pass just past midfield and went on the attack. She created a chance for herself but just missed off the crossbar.

Toward the end of the half, Seaside got an easy score on a slow, rolling pass from the right side that set up a two-foot shot. That cut it to 2-1 at halftime.

In the second half, Seaside created numerous opportunities but missed repeatedly. Glenn sealed the game for Ilwaco. She dribbled in from the perimeter and scored to extend the lead to 3-1, and later broke up a cross-pass at the other end.

“We’ve come along way (this season),” coach Andrew Goodwin said, noting his squad’s progress as a passing team during Ilwaco’s first year of soccer. “The heat I think got to us a little bit today after a while, but we pushed through that.”
