ILWACO — The Lady Fishermen defeated Castle Rock 70-32 Tuesday, Dec. 29. Ilwaco played strong defense and got good production on the perimeter and inside.
Hannah Ellsworth found Makenzie Kaech in transition for an 8-0 lead and scored on a baseline drive to put Ilwaco ahead 10-1. Defense and jump shots helped Ilwaco to a 14-1 lead late in the first period, but Nakayla Ehrhorn made a very difficult, hurried three-pointer to beat the first quarter buzzer and make it 14-7.
Ellsworth got going in the second quarter with a steal and basket, followed by a three-pointer. A baseline drive later in the period gave her nine for the half. Kaech powered her way to the basket off an inbounds pass for a 25-11 lead. Eliza Bannister then found her inside with a tough pass over a defender for a basket that put Ilwaco ahead 27-11. Kaech pushed the ball to create a transition play and found Jacobson under the basket for a 33-11 lead late in the period.
In the third period Kaech and Emily McMillan got going in transition. McMillan had a steal and layup, and baskets off Ellsworth and Bannister steals. Kaech had three straight transition layups for a 44-17 lead. Ehrhorn again beat the buzzer, this time with a shot beyond half-court, but the lead was 51-23 after three.
Kaech was tireless setting traps around half-court and had five steals for the game. McMillan came up with eight steals, playing back and reading the passes out of Ilwaco’s traps. Jacobson, coming off a nine for 11 game in Willapa Valley before Christmas, shot five of nine for 11 points with 11 rebounds and four blocks. Kaech scored 20, and Ellsworth had 15 with four steals. Bannister had six assists and nine rebounds. For the Lady Rockets Ehrhorn scored 13, with three three-pointers.
