RIDGEFIELD - The 2008-09 high school sports season kicked off with a 31-stroke victory for the Ilwaco boys' golf team over LaCenter Thursday. Sophomore Ryan Kukula won medalist honors with a round of 37 as he led the Fishermen to a 213-244 victory over Trico League rival LaCenter at the Tri-Mountain Golf Course near Ridgefield.
Jack and Patrick Whealdon each fired rounds of 41, Todd Oakes was close behind with a 43 round and Bobby Byrd carded a score of 51 to complete the team total for the defending state champion Fishermen. Matthew Lewis shot a non-scoring 56 for the varsity.
In junior varsity action Ilwaco edged the Wildcats 268-270 as Ross Kukula and Anthony Yoder shared medalist honors with scores of 44 and Clark Wilson came in with a 46. All three are eighth graders and as such are competing in an exhibition status and are not eligible for varsity play. David Lewis and Alias Blume also played for the Fishermen JV's.
Coach Dan Whealdon said, "The wind blew about 30 miles per hour out there today and that made scoring difficult. Ryan Kukula continues to play well in tough conditions. I am very happy when our number four player can win medalist in any match or tournament. I was also very pleased with our three eighth graders who continue to improve and play very well. Ross, Clark, and Anthony know how to compete and they are three good kids that enjoy the game and are not afraid to put in the practice time to get better."
