ABERDEEN - Ilwaco golfers shot their lowest team score of the season, yet were upset by Montesano by five strokes, 162 to 157. In the three-way match, the Fishermen humbled Hoquiam 162-177 at Highlands Golf Course south of Aberdeen.
Peter Gaynor and David Thorne shot brilliant 37s to tie for medalist honors. The number four golfer from Monte also fired a 37 and was the hero in their victory over Ilwaco, who is now 7-2 in dual action this season.
Christiaan Thorne shot a 43 and Adam Ellsworth completed the course in 45 strokes. Ryan Gray finished his round at 51. In non-counting action, Michael Lambert played exceptionally well, shooting 42. Derek Yasunaka chipped in a 45 and Nick King toured the course in 50 strokes.
"Our guys played smart golf today. They used irons for control on the Highlands Course and kept the ball in play and out of the woods," a pleased Coach Dan Whealdon said. "It is nice to see several of our players post their top scores of the season, especially with League and District coming up."
The Fishermen were to have another crack at Montesano on Tuesday in Surfside. "Our kids will be able to use their drivers on the longer course and their knowledge of Surfside should be a factor in turning the tables on Montesano," Whealdon predicted.
Ilwaco will pack their clubs to League and District October 18 and 19 in hopes of grabbing several spots in the State Tournament that will be played the end of May, 2003. "If we can get four golfers to make the cut at League, we have an excellent chance to be district champs. That's one of the things we are aiming for," Whealdon said.
